Tip #5: Disassembling Classes in Java

Have a mysterious undocumented class? Use javap, the Java class file disassembler. The default output is a listing of the public fields and methods of the class passed as its argument. Use the "-private" flag to print a listing of all members. Javap is included with the JDK and is located in the "bin" directory of the JDK installation.

For full source approximations, you'll want to use a decompiler. A good Java decompiler can reverse bytecode into source with amazing accuracy. For this reason, I recommend the use of an obfuscator to protect your bytecode. Mocha was probably the first Java decompiler out there and can still be found here. Most of the obfuscators out there are commercial though. I will add a link when I find a freeware one.
