abstract class - a class which lists abstract methods but provides no implementation. Particular implementations are defined by subclasses of the abstract class. An abstract class itself cannot be instantiated. adapter - a class that implements a particular interface, but supplies all empty methods. A subclass of the adapter may then override only the methods so desired. applet - a Java program which runs within the Java Virtual Machine of a Java-enabled web browser. An applet is limited by the security restrictions of the web browser. bean - a reusable software component that follows the JavaBeans model. JavaBeans is the reusable component architecture for Java. bytecode - an instruction format generated by a the Java compiler that is machine-independent. Bytecode is interpreted by the Java Virtual Machine. exception - an object which encapsulates an error condition. Exceptions are derived from the base class Exception. garbage collection - the automatic process by which the Java Virtual Machine detects and frees unused memory. interface - a construct which defines a set of methods but provides no implementation. Java Foundation Classes (JFC) - a collection of libraries that add advanced user interface capabilities. The Java Foundation Classes are only a standard part of Java 1.2 or greater. Java Virtual Machine (JVM) - an implementation which interprets Java bytecode for a given platform. JAR - a format for combining class files and other resources into a single file. JAR files have the extension .jar. package - a group of related classes and interfaces. Packages define name spaces and set limits on visibility. servlet - a server-side Java program that runs on a Java-enabled server. stream - an object from which a sequence of bytes can be read from or written to. subclass - a class that is directly or indirectly derived from another class. Also referred to as child class. superclass - a class from which another class is directly or indirectly derived. Also referred to as a base class or parent class. Swing - a collection of GUI components that enhance the original AWT. The Swing library is only a standard part of Java 1.2 or greater. Swing is a subset of the Java Foundation Classes. thread - a unit of execution which may run concurrently with other threads within the same process. |
